FAQ – Telldus
Telldus
Absolutely! There are a few ones coming along in the future. The first one in our next generation gateways that was introduced last year is the TellStick Flow, a TellStick that uses Bluetooth as the communication protocol. It’s ability to provide secured, two-way communication with devices that cost similar to 433MHz ones opens up a whole new door to home automation. With this new TellStick, you can finally do more with less.
Telldus Live, being the core for all the TellStick to provide powerful home automation services, will continue to offer new innovative services in the future, as all our TellStick, new and old, will depend on it.
As a matter of fact, we have recently uplifted the Telldus Live to become more green, and new services can be rolled out much faster, and become more reliable. All these were done totally behind the scenes. Even though you are seeing the same Telldus Live web pages and Telldus Live mobile apps, or the same Telldus API, underneath, it is no longer the same.
Not directly. If you are already using a TellStick (Net v2, ZNet Lite v1, ZNet Lite v2), you can just add the TellStick Flow via the new Telldus Flow app. It will then be just another TellStick under your disposal. You can create events and schedules between TellStick without worrying about the difference in protocols, and all communications would be local. This seamless TellStick integration is one the strongest advantages of Telldus.
The hardware of the TellStick Net v2 and ZNet Lite v2 no longer satisfy future smart home demands, especially on protocols and their security requirements. Therefore we have decided to discontinue them in favour of a new breed of low cost, high performance solutions.
No worries as long as you have signed up for insurance on your TellStick. Even though we no longer sell TellStick Net/ZNet lite v2, we will continue to support these gateways until we have run out of replacement units and spare parts (support for old TellStick will remain as long as our users demand this). That would be at least a few years down the road.
New models of TellStick will no longer support 433MHz as it is an old technology that is insecure and one-way communication. You will never know if a plug is turned on or not until you physically inspect it, for example. This is not the smart home we envisioned in your future. That is why Telldus has turned towards Bluetooth mesh, Zigbee and Matter as alternatives to 433MHz. All these allow us to offer devices at similar cost to the 433MHz ones yet with better security and reliability. With this change, we are also able to bring a plethora of smart devices to the portfolio with respect to the design, cost and size.
On the other hand, some major components on the TellStick Net/ZNet lite v2 are either no longer available or have become extremely expensive. Offering a new TellStick that would continue to work with the current 433MHz devices is no longer an option to us, even if we want to.
Yes. All TellStick need Telldus Live to provide a complete range of home automation services. You will start seeing more and more innovative services offered from Telldus Live that maximise your investment in home automation.
The ultimate goal of Telldus Flow app is to completely replace the Telldus Live mobile so that you don’t have to use two apps to manage your Telldus system. You should not found any issue by using only the Telldus Flow app to manage your Telldus smart home. Having said that, we understand that you may still prefer the existing apps before the Telldus Flow app has all the nice features that you want. Therefore, we will keep the existing apps available and as they were until we feel confident that you are happy with the Telldus Flow app.
The Telldus Flow app offers features that help people to simplify the setup of home automation by means of Automation Cards. Automation cards allow you to setup both the scheduler and events for your home automation. The Telldus Flow app is also required to setup the Bluetooth mesh devices including the TellStick Flow. You should not find it an issue by using only the Telldus Flow app to manage your Telldus smart home.
The most important kind of device it will bring to you is lighting! These are smart lightings that you would be able to schedule along with your sensors and other devices! We will keep bringing in different kinds of supported sensors, plugs and outlets, alarms and so on in the upcoming months and years.
