What is Zigbee?

Zigbee is an open wireless standard (IEEE 802.15.4) that runs on the 2.4 GHz band. Thanks to a self-healing mesh network, each networked device (e.g. lights mounted in the wall) can relay the signal further, so the range becomes more effective the more gadgets you have. The technology is power-efficient – battery-powered sensors can last for years – and uses modern 128-bit encryption for high security.

How does it work?

  1. The coordinator – in our case Telldus hub 1, creates the network and keeps track of all nodes.
  2. Routers – network-connected devices that are powered by a fixed power source (e.g. smart plugs) automatically amplify and extend the signal.
  3. End nodes - battery-powered products such as door or temperature sensors “sleep” most of the time and only wake up when needed.

The result is lightning-fast response times, high stability even in large homes and an installation that basically takes care of itself: connect hub 1, press "add Zigbee device" - done.

Zigbee mesh – the self-healing network

With Zigbee, each networked light, sensor, or smart plug acts as a small repeater that relays the signal to the next device. The network repairs itself if a node goes down, so communication always finds a new path and you get stable coverage throughout your home—even through concrete walls and multiple floors. The more Zigbee products you add, the stronger the network becomes, while battery-powered devices save power by sleeping until they’re needed.
